Common Digital Marketing Mistakes You Need to Avoid

The biggest problem with marketing today is that it’s overwhelming

So many different strategies, tactics, and tools to try, and everybody screaming at you that their way is the best way, if not the only way.

That’s why in this email I’m going to help you cut through the clutter.

And I’m going to share with you 3 marketing mistakes I see most businesses (at least 80%) making on a daily basis.

Avoid these and you’re well on your way to growing your business, and getting more clients, more sales, and more revenue.

Mistake #1) Mismatched Marketing

When it comes to deciding on the next marketing strategy to use, most people simply look around at their competitors, or whatever the latest and greatest social media network is, or… they just guess…

Rarely does this “Random Acts Of Marketing: approach work.

The key to effective marketing comes from lining up everything in your business.

Model -> Market -> Message -> Media -> Moment

I'll explain.

First, start by defining what I want to do (business model)

...and who I want to do it for (market)

...then find what their biggest pains and problems are that my offer can solve (message)

...and talk about those ad nauseam where they're present and active online (media)

...and do it again, and again, and again (moment).

Mistake #2) Asymmetrical Marketing

The next mistake is having lopsided, or asymmetrical marketing.

Either focusing all of your marketing on creating an endless stream of “value” and free content.

OR…

Doing nothing but pitching, promoting, and trying to close the sale at all costs.

The “all value all the time” approach sounds good BUT it leads to a market that comes to expect only freebies. And backs away the second you make an offer.

The “all selling all the time” approach may lead to a few initial sales, but it disrespects the customer journey and the fact that the bulk of your sales are going to come later - after trust has been established.

Which leads me to mistake #3

Mistake #3) Premature Marketing

This mistake goes hand in hand with Mistakes #1 and #2 because it’s all about being in the right place, saying the right things, to the right people, but at the wrong time.

When it comes to your clients, there are typically 3 groups of people.

5% of your market is ready to buy now. They have their credit cards out and they’re actively searching for a solution to their problem.

10% will buy in the next 30 to 90 days. They’re almost there. They just need a little more info.

85% will buy in the next 4 to 18 months. This group of people is 4X bigger than the others and is all too often ignored, neglected, or completely overlooked. And that’s a shame. And a waste.

Despite what you may have been heard about how “it never hurts to ask”

...the truth is, It can hurt to ask.

Especially if the “ask” is done prematurely before any relationship has been formed.

It’s kinda like proposing marriage on the first date. 98 times out of 100 you’re gonna get a “no” ...and no chance at a second date either!

The solution here is to use a structured and sequential approach with your marketing that allows you to build a connection, trust, and rapport.

When you do this right, the client buys, instead of you having to “sell” (i.e. persuade, convince, or coerce)
